I want to congratulate the UCSC Class of 2020 on their very grand accomplishment. I thank the Community of supporting families, mentors, teachers, and friends that provided so much for these determined students. This Community can be proud of UCSC Class of 2020 graduates which are highly educated and well informed citizens, ready to improve and lead our country into the future. I am extremely proud of my daughter, Alexis Thomas. Alexis has the ethics to always move forward for herself and more important, to all that she can help. Whether it is, the animals around us, friends, the environment, or her family, her generosity and love for all is one of my greatest inspirations. I would like to again thank all of UCSC Faculty, Students, and Supporters, for the help to fulfill a dream that in part started from immigrants coming to our great Country. Alexis’ Great Grandparents were Greek immigrants and their dream was for someday to enable their heirs to be part of what you have accomplished. All of you have made our family proud to be part of this special moment. .. The world is ever changing and the future is yours to change for the better!

I am resoundingly proud and in awe of you - for having the courage to go after your dreams and never look back. Your stellar academic and personal achievements over the last 4 years tell your story and illuminate the extraordinary effort and hard work you've given to this endeavor - 4 years of 7-day study schedules year round, challenging yourself with rigorous science courses in the summer (including O Chem!) at UCSD and UCLA, always approaching learning for the genuine sake of mastering the material, never taking the easy way out, never letting up, never giving up. Even in our late night calls when you were overwhelmed and feeling depleted, the fight inside never left. Determined, devoted, and deserving. You've also fought battle after battle you should not have had to fight, but managed to persevere and rise higher because of it - with personal integrity that cannot be shaken.

As I look at who you've become, I have to ask myself - where did that shy and unsure girl go? I remember 4 years ago, when the girl I knew backed out of attending NYU, not sure of herself and her capabilities, but determined to set herself up for success. You are now the young woman who founded an on-campus club and held leadership roles in others, who led a large group of students on a medical mission to Peru, who became an EMT ready to help others, who by herself organized a successful Santa Cruz Senior Health Fair earning wide-spread accolades, who pursued a love of humanity and added a classics minor to a Human Bio major-just for fun, who successfully completed world-class research internships and was selected to a prominent leadership program for minorities, and who made life long friends who value your genuine and loyal friendship.

In a few short months you'll be off on your new journey at Stanford and I am sure that I will have the same reflections when you finish graduate school, and then medical school, as I do now - you will continue to grow yet never lose sight of who you are; to pursue with passion without losing your humility; and to endeavor with grace in all that you do. Never giving up, always looking forward.

Seems like every time I have conversations with you these days, you just blow me away with how much you've grown and how wise you've gotten! When you first came to our life, there were so many questions and wondering. What kind of person will you grow up to be? What kind of profession will you go into? Will you like school? It is amazing to me that you now have a bachelors degree from UCSC. That is very impressive. I could not be more proud. Your interest in computer gaming has been long and consistent. I think you have found your true calling at a young age. This is remarkable and will most likely lead to a satisfying, successful, and happy career.

I like to think I had a small part in your success. Your mother and I always tried to make sure your childhood was loving and fun and nurturing. We sure had fun along the way , with all the trips and comfortable relaxed home life. I know I enjoyed it all and I hope you did too.

Now you will be entering the next phase of your life. Remember, "every new beginning comes at some other beginnings end" . And on and on it goes. Such is life.
