Congratulations on earning that diploma! Whether it took you four years, two years, or 20 years, it was hard, and you should be proud of yourself. I graduated from UCSC in 2009, a year after the last Great Recession spiraled the US economy into years of uncertainty and turmoil. Many of my peers found ourselves with few or no job prospects, and almost everyone I knew lived at home with their parents for at least a year or longer after graduating. All my college friends found fulfilling careers- even if they had to pivot once or several times- in the 11 years since. As you walk out into an uncertain world and job market, don’t lose sight of the things you’re passionate about and don’t be afraid to get creative when it comes to the work you do. UCSC has set you up with the tools you need to be a successful and functional adult, and the mindset to be an engaged and thoughtful citizen of this planet- you got this!

Congratulations to all the UCSC graduates of 2020! I walked back in 2003 (got my degree as a super senior in 2004) with my friends and in front of all my family. It was one of the greatest moments and memories in my life that I will cherish forever. Mainly because it was such a big and grand accomplishment that I completely. And looking back now on everything I learned and experienced in college, I can honestly say those were the best years of my life! And it does break my heart to hear and know that graduates won't be able to have this "walking" experience, no one can ever take away the fact that YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED YOUR GOAL OF RECEIVING YOUR DEGREE! Always remember all your hard work and effort you put into getting your degree and celebrate that every single day. Get one of those fancy expensive degree frames and hang up that degree! Be proud! Stay in contact with friends you've made (aka KEEP THAT NETWORK ALIVE). Never forget those fun times you had (academic and non academic) and cherish that forever. I have never returned to living so close to the ocean and seeing the forest everyday.....CHERISH THAT FEELING AND MEMORY! I'm truly sorry that you cannot have your ceremony in the woods or overlooking the ocean. But where ever you are at to celebrate, know that it was all worth it! As an RA for two years and graduating a quarter ahead of your class is impressive. Good things await you and Covid-19 will just be a little spot in your life. While it’s disappointing that you will not get the long awaited graduation, your diploma speaks louder than a ceremony.

Happy happy day!! I imagine at the precipice of this next phase of your earthly sojourn you are excited in your accomplishments and events that will come to pass! You may also have some trepidation if you don't have the dream job all lined up. I want to let you know. Don't let it bother your mind. Pursue what you love to do. Life is not a series of accomplishments. Life is an ever-unfolding of micro-events — moment to moment, and day-to-day. How you anything is how you do everything. I implore you to follow your joy. So your life will be filled with joy. I am not going to promise this will lead you to the job or career you believe is your calling, however, I wholeheartedly believe and have experienced that it will lead you to a beautiful life.

I wish you that you continue to question, who you are and what your opinions are and why you have them. And then just live as best you can fearlessly. That is not living without fear, it is not allowing fear to drive your decision making. Also, be kind. You can't underestimate how impactful being kind is. It is not sexy, it will not always get you what you want, but that time when your small kindness can open the heart of another is worth it. Besides, it makes you feel good to treat others well. Don't mistake that for being a pushover. Sometimes kindness is to tell another that they are out of line or what they are doing is not in harmony with the highest good of all in that situation or that you can't be in their life any longer. I will leave you with this quote from Paramahansa Yogananda, "Your trials did not come to punish you, but to awaken you..."

I hope you embrace all the good life has already released for you.
